If Your Cat Goes Missing: What to Do

• Start searching immediately. Most indoor cats stay surprisingly close to home, often hiding silently under decks, porches, sheds, bushes, or in garages.

• Search at dawn and dusk. These are the quietest times, making it easier to hear or spot your cat.

• Bring a flashlight. Even during the day, shining a light into hiding spots can help you catch the reflection of your cat's eyes.

• Set a humane trap. Bait it with strong-smelling food like tuna or sardines, and monitor it frequently.

• Place familiar scents outside. Set out recently worn clothing, a blanket, or bedding that smells like home. If you use a litter box, placing a small amount of used litter outside may also help some cats find their way back.

• Notify local shelters, rescues, animal control, and veterinary offices. Leave your contact information and a recent photo.

• Post on local lost-and-found pet groups. Share clear, recent photos and include the area where your cat was last seen.

• Create simple flyers. Include a clear photo, your cat's name, where they were last seen, and your phone number.

• Check security cameras. Review your own footage and ask neighbors to check theirs.

• Search nearby at night. Walk quietly, call your cat in a calm voice, and pause often to listen for movement or meows.

• Leave food only if you're monitoring it. Unattended food can attract wildlife and discourage your cat from approaching a trap.

• Don't give up too soon. Many cats are found days, weeks, or even months after going missing.

Preparation Tip: Keep several recent photos of your cat saved on your phone, and make sure your cat wears an ID tag and has a registered microchip with up-to-date contact information.
